Staff Assistant Experience - FAQs
 
Visiting the Campus
  • Is there an open house that potential candidates and their families can attend? Please contact our Rhinebeck office to arrange a personal tour and an interview.
  • Is transportation available to Ramapo for Children’s Rhinebeck site?  Ramapo for Children will assist potential Staff Assistants in navigating transportation. The Rhinebeck campus is easily accessible via AMTRAK. It is a 10-minute drive from the Rhinecliff train station (20 miles north of Poughkeepsie) and Ramapo staff will pick up Staff Assistants and their families at the station.
  •  Can Staff Assistants have visitors? Can s/he leave the campus during that time?  Yes, family members may visit during Staff Assistants' off hours, and Staff Assistants may travel off campus alone or with friends depending on each individual's circumstances.
 
Health and Dietary Topics
  • What if a candidate has specific health and dietary concerns, i.e. seizures, cerebral palsy, severe allergic reactions to medication and foods? For young adults with specific problems affecting their health, Ramapo for Children will consult with the candidate’s physician and parents/guardian to design an appropriate program to assure the Staff Assistant’s health and vitality.
  • Would a candidate who has limited language or is considered toward the middle or lower end of the autism spectrum be considered for the Staff Assistant Experience? Yes! Factors for accepting a young adult into the program are determined during the interview. Staff Assistants must be able to navigate a large campus, capable of building interpersonal relationships, be willing to learn job-related skills, and want to become self-reliant and more independent.
  • How are medications regulated? We will help make the medication available to Staff Assistants on a timely basis. Young adults must be capable of identifying and taking his/her own medication.

Job-related Questions
  • Will Staff Assistants learn multiple jobs? Staff Assistants will learn a range of job-related skills that can be applied to most work situations. 
  • What are the work-related activities that Staff Assistants have available to them? The range of work experience available to Staff Assistants include: food service; child care; buildings and grounds maintenance; landscaping; housekeeping; and office support. Staff Assistants may also receive job training as adventure program specialists and camp counselors.
  • After completing the program, will Ramapo for Children help a Staff Assistant find a job?  Ramapo for Children does not help Staff Assistants find jobs. Ramapo will help young adults learn skills related to: applying for a job; completing a job application; practicing for an interview; and creating a resume. Ramapo for Children will provide a list of agencies that provide job-training resources and can assist in searching for an appropriate job.

Continuing Education Opportunities
  • Do you provide a Driver’s Education program? Yes. Ramapo for Children can arrange for this service with a community partner at an additional cost paid directly by the family. This instruction would then be considered part of the Staff Assistant's program and supervised by the Program Director.
  • My child has an IEP Diploma. Do you provide a GED program? Ramapo for Children can arrange for an evaluation and on-going instruction with a community partner at an additional cost paid directly by the family. This instruction would then be considered part of the Staff Assistant's program and supervised by the mentor.

Fees and Financial Details

  • What does the Staff Assistant Experience cost? The Staff Assistant Experience fee is $1050 per week for a minimum commitment of 12-weeks. Ramapo for Children conducts “rolling admissions” and the program runs for 36 weeks, from early March through Thanksgiving.
  • What does the fee include? The program includes: room; board; an individualized learning program; job training; life skills training; and community recreation. In addition, Staff Assistants are each assigned a program mentor and receive individual job coaching. A stipend of $50 weekly is paid to the Staff Assistants for living expenses and is included in the fee. The fee does not include driver’s education or training, academic tutoring or GED preparation, and/or any other type of special programming or instruction not specifically stated.
  • Is there scholarship assistance available for the Staff Assistant Experience program? Scholarship support is limited. Once a Staff Assistant is accepted into the program, you may apply to the Fee Committee for consideration.
  • Is there a payment plan available? Yes, you will be able to pay in installments.
  • Is the Staff Assistant Experience covered by Medicaid? Not at this time.
