Teen Leadership

Teen Leadership offers teenagers a variety of challenging team-building activities and educational opportunities designed to build healthy relationships and promote discipline, self-reflection, a willing attitude, and concern for others. Teen Leaders are expected to commit to a set of community values and individual principles that are reinforced through small group seminars, adventure-based recreational activities, community service projects, and consistent, ongoing contact with a Ramapo mentor.

Program offerings:
  • A summer camp experience of 2 to 6 weeks;
  • one weekend at Ramapo for Children's sleep-away camp per month (except January);
  • weekly telephone contact with your teen by a Ramapo mentor;
  • volunteering opportunities with local non-profits for work based learning and community service;
  • job intern opportunities for work experience (after age 16).
Housing and Activities

Teen Leadership campers live in platform tents during the summer and in heated lodge housing during the colder months at Ramapo for Children's scenic outdoor campus in Rhinebeck, New York.  They participate in a challenging variety of outdoor activities such as camping, boating, swimming field sports, hiking and ropes courses.  Peer group counseling and basic job training are also important components of the program.  Trips off campus offer exciting opportunities as well, including recreational hiking, backpacking and canoeing adventures in the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains, and educational community service projects in the Hudson Valley.

Mentoring

Mentoring is a unique aspect and critical component of Teen Leadership program.  It is a nurturing relationship between a counselor at Ramapo for Children and a teen camper that is formed to support the young adult through their adolescent development.  These mentoring relationships positively influence the direction of a teen’s development and significantly increase his or her resilience.  Caring counselors are available to Teen Leadership campers on a consistent and predictable basis:
  • The counselors/mentors speak by phone to the teen leaders weekly to provide information, advice and ongoing support about issues in school, at home, and in the community.
  • They spend time each week focusing on conflict resolution, helping to resolve issues that are difficult for teens to manage by themselves and that would not otherwise be addressed in a timely fashion.
  • In addition, the mentor is available to the family as a resource to establish a positive working alliance.
Please fill out the camper application form, the summer food service program eligibility form, the health history form completely. Please distribute the professional report forms to your child’s teacher and counselor or therapist. These reports will help to determine whether our therapeutic program is appropriate for your child.  Please have your child's physican complete the physical exam form.

Please understand that Ramapo will not review an application until we have received all the following forms.

· Camper Application

· Two Professional Reports

· Health History and Examination Form

We recommend that you stay in touch with the people completing the professional report(s) to make sure they have been completed, and then personally forward all the required materials together.  Delay in acceptance indicates that the reports have not been returned.  Since camp fills quickly, this may result in an opening not being available for your child.  We recommend that you keep photo copies of completed forms for your reference, as we are unable to provide such if needed at a later date.

To apply for financial aid you must also complete the Reduced Camper Fee Application.  You may qualify for a reduced fee even if you do not qualify for the Summer Food Service Program. The reduced fee is set on a sliding scale which is based on family income and need.  The full fee for session I is $2,600.00, sessions II or III is $4,000.00, five week session is $7,000.00, six week session is $8,400.00 and the eight week session is $11,400.00. The school year program fee is $2,500.00.   As soon as we evaluate the required information, the fee will be set and registration materials will be forwarded.
