Who participates in school year programs for youth at Ramapo? Ramapo works with schools, leadership programs, after school programs, social service agencies, community-based programs, residential treatment centers, and other programs serving youth.
What are the goals of these programs? We provide groups of youth the opportunity to engage in a wide variety of activities which enable them to: · Try new things · See each other in a new light · Learn more about themselves · Engage in challenging outdoor experiences
I've heard about several places like this in the area. Why should my group come to Ramapo? Ramapo is different than other places because: · You will be assigned a group leader who will create a program to fit your group's needs, and staff who will be with your group throughout the entire program. · Our staff has experience working with diverse populations of youth and adults, including youth identified as at risk or with special needs. · Our programs are safe, challenging, and enjoyable, and we provide comfortable, modern accommodations in a beautiful natural environment.
What activities are offered? · Cooperative games · Initiatives (hands-on group problem-solving activities) · High and low ropes courses · Hiking · Rowboating/canoeing · Swimming (seasonal) · Campfires (storytelling, campfire cooking) · Orienteering · Arts and crafts (silkscreening, group murals, family banners, dreamcatchers, etc.) · Cooking projects · Reflective experiences (journaling, poetry workshops) · Athletic activities (basketball, kickball, softball, relay races) · Recreational activities (board games, cards, etc.) · Parent/staff training workshops (behavior management, staff supervision, character education)
How long do groups stay? Groups can come for day programs or overnight programs. Most overnight programs stay one or two nights, but some groups stay longer.
Where do we sleep? Ramapo has three modern, heated lodges. In addition, Ramapo has numerous rustic housing facilities which are available during warmer months. To see photos of our school year housing facilities, please click here.
Can you accommodate participants with food allergies or dietary restrictions (vegetarian, kosher, etc.)? Ramapo provides a vegetarian option at every meal, however, we do not have a kosher kitchen. We will do our best to accommodate each group, but special situations should be discussed with your group leader in advance.
What if the weather is bad? Ramapo runs programs rain or shine. We will rearrange the schedule to take advantage of good weather, but we will move activities indoors or substitute activities in order to continue providing a quality program for your group, even in inclement weather.
When is Ramapo open to school year groups? Ramapo is open from March 1st through the middle of June, and then from the end of August through the middle of December. Exact dates depend on the schedule for our summer camp program, during which we are closed to outside groups. For this year's dates, please click here.
